When I arrived at the beach this morning, the sun had just risen above the horizon, and was balancing perfectly on the edge of the sea. As I walked along the margin of the surf, I noticed the length of the shadows, made strong by the low angle of the sun and the clear air. Pebbles peeked out of the sand, like islands. And I saw how even the smallest stone casts a shadow many times its own size.
