This morning the Isle of Wight was completely obscured by fog, yet the rest of the sea and the mainland was in brilliant sunshine. The island may as well have not existed. As I made my way along the beach, the bank of fog crept slowly across the Solent, and eventually, gradually, began to overwhelm the pier. Little by little the pier, too, was engulfed. It disappeared before my eyes.
